There always seemed to be a lot of controversy regarding my grandfather and whether he was a good man; whether he was a nice man. When I was a child I used to visit my grandparents almost every weekend. My grandfather showed me lots of love and I miss him.

Whether or not your grandfather was a good man, a nice man, all lies in the way you saw him. If you saw him as good and kind, then he was. Your opinion in this, is the only one that matters.
He loved you so much and I think it was reciprocated. What anyone else thinks is meaningless.
